Happy St Patrick's Day

According to the Celtic legend, what saint “discovered” America a thousand years before Christopher Columbus? (answer following)


Gothic Arch Sunday's challenge happened to be All Things Celtic...this is my contribution.
the answer is: Saint Brendan, an Irish monk who is known as Brendan the Navigator and Brendan the Voyager.
